Cable and track safety in Burnaby

Why Is My Garage Door Hanging Crooked?

An uneven door often points to lost cable tension, a displaced cable, a drum problem or track-and-roller resistance. Stop operation before the door pulls farther out of alignment.

The short answer

Uneven Travel Means The Lifting System Needs Attention

Both sides of a sectional door should rise and lower together. Lift cables wrap around drums and transfer spring force to the bottom of the door. If a cable frays, breaks, becomes slack or leaves its drum, one side may lose support.

A bent track, displaced roller, damaged section or spring problem can create a similar symptom. The angle alone does not prove which component failed, so forcing the door level is unsafe.

Do not operate the opener. Keep people and vehicles clear, especially when the door is partly open or visibly unstable.

Likely causes

What Can Make A Garage Door Uneven?

Broken Lift Cable

One side can drop or stop moving when its cable no longer carries the door.

Cable Off The Drum

A cable can lose its correct groove and develop uneven tension or slack.

Frayed Cable

Broken strands weaken the cable and can change how it tracks under load.

Bent Or Loose Track

A damaged rail or bracket may pinch a roller and interrupt smooth travel.

Displaced Roller

A roller outside the track can let part of the door move away from its intended path.

Spring Or Section Damage

Uneven counterbalance or a distorted door section can affect alignment across the opening.

A cable warning sign

Look For Fraying Without Touching The Hardware

From a safe distance, check whether both cables appear taut and correctly routed. Frayed strands, a slack loop or a cable hanging away from the track deserves immediate attention.

  • One cable looks loose while the other remains tight
  • Wire strands are separating near the bottom bracket
  • The cable is no longer seated on the drum
  • The bottom edge is no longer level
  • The door made a sharp snap before tilting

Never cut, pull or re-seat a lift cable. The connected spring and drum system can carry significant tension.

Track symptoms

When The Rail Or Roller Is Part Of The Problem

Scraping, a widening track gap, loose brackets or a roller riding against the rail edge can accompany a crooked door. Track damage may follow impact, loose hardware, section distortion or earlier cable problems.

Do not hammer a loaded track straight or loosen the lower brackets. A technician should first stabilize the door, identify why it moved out of alignment and then decide whether realignment or component replacement is appropriate.

Safe response

What To Do With A Crooked Garage Door

  1. Stop all remote, keypad and wall-control operation.
  2. Do not walk or park beneath a partly open door.
  3. Keep hands away from cables, drums, springs and bottom brackets.
  4. Photograph the door from a safe distance if it helps describe the symptom.
  5. Arrange an inspection that covers cables, drums, springs, rollers, tracks and sections.

Uneven-door questions

Garage Door Alignment FAQs

What causes one side of a garage door to hang lower?

A loose, broken or displaced lift cable is a common cause, but drum, spring, roller, track and door-section problems can also create uneven movement.

Can I straighten a crooked garage door myself?

Do not loosen cables, drums, springs, bottom brackets or loaded track supports. These parts can be under dangerous tension and require controlled diagnosis.

Should I keep using the opener if the door is uneven?

No. Continued operation can pull the door farther out of alignment, damage sections or tracks and overload the opener.

Is a crooked door always a track problem?

No. The track may be bent or obstructed, but cable tension, drum seating, spring balance and roller condition must also be checked.
